Welcome to the Workshop: JB’s Woodcrafts

Welcome to JB’s Woodcrafts, a one-man operation run by me, JB, out of my home workshop in Perth, WA.

When I suddenly found myself back on the job market a few years ago, what started as a lifelong passion for woodworking quickly turned into an opportunity. With nothing but time on my hands, I threw myself back into woodworking and, naturally, JB’s Woodcrafts was born.

Over the years, my work has evolved between small, hand-crafted wooden products, as well as custom furniture and restoration projects. I like to use salvaged wood when I can, including fallen trees all the way from the Pilbara to the Perth bushlands.

At the heart of JB’s Woodcrafts is my workshop, and I invite you to step inside and take a look around.

Where it started

In 2018, we purchased a house and made the move to Perth. The house was a good fit for my family, but most importantly… it came with a shed that was four times bigger than the garage I’d been set up in for the last 20 years.

Sold.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The shed started out as two sheds – which only became a real problem when we discovered that the concrete flooring had been poured over the base of the dividing wall, so we couldn’t easily tear it down. Not only that, but the flooring was higher on one side of the wall than the other.

We persevered, and the wall was eventually removed. The effort of it is memorialized by a sloped joint that now runs all the way down the middle of the workshop (as seen below). I’d say it adds charm.

There were other safety and functional improvements to make, too – replace the lights, sort out the ventilation, insulation, wiring, install some overhead cable management, etc.

How it’s going

Fitting out the workshop was a gradual process.

It started with building custom storage for the tools I already owned. Over time, as I purchased new tools and machinery, I would build custom cabinetry, housings and workbenches for them.

Slowly, I made my workshop as functional as possible to suit the way I like to work (a little organised chaos never hurt anybody).

Below are a few photos of the workshop over the years. Stay tuned for future posts to see a spotlight on some of my projects!

Where we started – crammed into half of a two-car garage!
Work in progress! Taken shortly after moving in.
And here it is today – spacious, and purpose-built.
